    Cool hotel, breakfast amenity not the best

    The Epicurean is a cool hotel with a mid-century modern/industrial vibe directly across the street from a world famous steakhouse. The theme is widely based around wine, which I am totally a fan of. At check-in there was an opportunity for a welcome glass of wine, as well as each evening around happy hour time. I found the staff to be quite helpful and welcoming. We were told the hotel was near capacity, therefore no available upgrades. On the second night of the stay I noticed a large party being set up directly outside our window. To avoid any potential issues, I requested to be switched into another room away from the noise. There was no issue in doing this and the rooms were effortlessly swapped. My biggest gripe at this property is the platinum free breakfast amenity. The voucher allows for "2 eggs, toast & protein or $8 towards an entree." Beverages other than water were not included, which I found particularly bizarre considering the coffee in the lobby was free each morning. On subsequent visits we just brought the cup from the lobby into the restaurant. Even with the basic breakfast, it was quite impossible for it to be "complimentary" as you were still charged tax with an expected tip. Compared to other high-end properties I found this breakfast policy to be quite 'cheap.' Other than this the stay was overall positive, but I would consider checking out other properties in the Tampa area on a future visit.

    Breakfast voucher not my favorite

    I have gold status through the AmEx Bonvoy credit card, and had booked one night on points and one night with an award certificate. My husband is platinum and had booked the third and last night on points through his account. As gold, I don’t get breakfast offered as a welcome amenity, but he does as platinum. I was pleasantly surprised that they gave us breakfast vouchers for all 3 nights, even though only 1 night was in his name. For this reason I chose not applicable for the breakfast question, even though I did receive. I was disappointed however that the breakfast voucher is valid for a basic egg and toast breakfast or $8 off your choice. That would have been fine, but it’s impossible to get a free breakfast as with many other hotels. They charge for tax on the cost of the breakfast, plus they charge $3+ for a cup of coffee, even though they have free coffee in the lobby. The hotel was nice and the complimentary wine offered at the check-in desk was an appreciated touch, but had I not used points, I don’t think it was worth the several hundred per night rate.
